-How to Party &/or Network with Hollywood Movers and Shakers-
According to Skip Press, the accomplished screenwriter,:
"certain activities that are open to the public will allow you to mix with Hollywood movers and shakers...
www.oscars.org - The main organization that just about everyone in Hollywood wants to belong to is the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. By simply surfing to www.oscars,org and clicking on Events you'll find a place to sign up to be automatically notified via email of current events, public programs, and events of the Academy Foundation that include 'film-related exhibitions, screenings, lectures and seminars, and the Student Academy Awards, among other activities.' Who could you meet at such events? Just about anyone. Remember, most movie stars, directors, and producers are film fans, too.
www.emmys.org - Similarly, by... (clicking on this site) and clicking on Events, you can sign up for email updates on activities at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood. These events include 'behind-the-scenes evenings with the most popular and acclaimed shows currently on the air, as well as workshops and seminars on employment, career, ad social issues, and conferences on emerging technologies and information systems.' ...
www.wga.org - (If you are a writer, screenwriter, or just want to network with other screenwriters) The organization most screenwriters aspire to join is the Writers Guild of America, west...They put on events like the 'Writers on Writing' seminar series... The series showcases an outstanding motion picture or television writer each month discussing how their careers have developed, their approach to their craft, and so forth, with each interview followed by a question-and-answer period. Most of these events are open to the public... For more information see the Web site... or call (323)782-4692.
www.ArcLightCinemas.com - There are public venues unique to Hollywood that support and celebrate the business and offer people an opportunity to meet like-minded people, successful or pre-successful. ( Press lists Arc Light as an example of this kind of venue.)...
www.laweekly.com -In general, the main 'bible' of happenings in Los Angeles is published every week in ...(this) free newspaper...
www.macafricaevents.com - Lastly, since any club is only as successful as its ability to attract and keep patrons, it hires producers to get the public to their venues... (Here is one that Mr. Press likes ):

Fax:(818)342-2789
Email:macafrica@earthlink.net"
(The web site is more helpful if you email her and find out how to register. That way you can search all of the events.)
I strongly recommend Skip Press's book,: "The Ultimate Writer's Guide to Hollywood", which I used as a source for the networking portion of this post. If you are a screenwriter (or aspire to be one) or even a filmmaker, do yourself a favor and get this book. Personally, I have this bad habit of highlighting things that I find important in books. I ended up highlighting most of this man's book. That's how good I thought his book was. Also, his web site can be found at:

"The PAGE Awards were established by an alliance of Hollywood producers, agents, and development executives. Our goal : to discover the most exciting new screenplays by up-and-coming writers from across the country and around the world...
It's a Catch 22. While producers and agents continually complain that they can't find good material, talented writers who live outside Los Angeles and have no 'connections' within the industry find it virtually impossible to penetrate the barriers of the Hollywood system. Our objective is to bridge that gap - giving new screenwriters the opportunity to get their scripts into the hands of industry professionals- and also serving as a much-needed resource for Hollywood producers, agents, and development execs who are searching for quality material.
...(W)e encourage writers to submit scripts of every genre, and we present awards in nine different categories. Not only do our winning writers receive over $25,000 in cash and prizes, but most importantly, all contestants have the opportunity to get their scripts read by Hollywood professionals who are currently in search of new talent."

Here are two sites that give out necessary advice to screenwriters that enter competitions:
www.coverscript.com/contestadvice.html
http://breakingin.net/choosey.htm (and their other link: http://breakingin.net/target_submissions.htm -this link is helpful if you don't have an agent.-)
Here are some other resources for screenwriters:
www.triggerstreet.com -This site (from Kevin Spacey) is a way to gain feedback and exposure for your script.
http://moviebytes.com/ReportCard.cfm - According to the breakingin.net site, this site has the most comprehensive listing of Screenwriting Competitions. After relying on many of their listings myself, I have to agree with them. This site even has report cards on each of the competitions.
http://hollywoodlitsales.com - Use this site to find out (instantly) which stories and scripts have sold, who sold them, and who bought them. The site also has a huge list of competitions; and much more.
http://scriptsales.com/ - This is another great site that lists everything about scripts that are sold.
http://Rx4scripts.com/ -This site provides great lists of active independent producers, as well as important advice for screenwriters, and extraordinary links.
http://filmstew.com - Much like the last site, this site will help screenwriters find active independent producers for their scripts. This site also features competitions, a contact list, and much more.
www.productionhub.com/events/listings.asp - This extensive listing of events (that is provided by Production Hub-the search engine for production-) is indispensible for screenwriters (especially those interested in finding out about prizes, competitions, awards, and prizes). Additionally, there are events listed that are pertinent to filmmakers.
In Skip Press's phenomenal book, The Ultimate Screenwriter's Guide to Hollywood, he gives one other piece of advice that I would like to use as a segue to my next section. He advises his readers to branch out into filmmaking, rather than just becoming screenwriters. He cites several reasons to consider doing this:
1." Have you been frustrated in trying to sell a screenplay? Getting yourself on the talent radar screen of Hollywood might ultimately mean making your own movie. The majority of the finalists at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 were films made by people who had seen their scripts repeatedly turned down in the Hollywood development process. The director of the festival made a point of this when first talking with the press about the chosen few. In our digital age, movies don't have to be expensive."
And he backs this last claim up by directing his readers to free and inexpensive tools (especially software) that can be used in fimmaking. I think that fimmakers ( in addition to screenwriters) can learn almost everything they need to know by reading this book.
2."As a screenwriter, you need to focus on your own strengths and hew to them vigorously. Every producer's assistant , when pressed for what the producer is really looking for, will say, 'An original voice'. But guess what? They get more excited watching movies than they do reading scripts"
3."Your original voice,... is a pristine domain where no one may trespass. If you are certain of it, if you display clarity and distinctive style, that voice can transform people's lives. Most screen(plays)... are rewritten. If you make a movie from your script, though, you can preserve your voice."
4.He cites examples of how films were put on sites such as www.ifilm.com and got millions of people to watch them. He tells his readers that this will really grab the attention of Hollywood.
5. "What if you shot a truly great screenplay from a script you wrote, and sent someone an email with a Web site link for watching it? Put yourself in an executive's shoes. Which would you rather do, read a few pages, or see actors on a screen?"
6."It became clear to me that people who make movies (as opposed to writers) get most of Hollywood's attention."
7."If you're only a screenwriter, you can make a nice living. Until you become a filmmaker, however, you won't fully understand how movies work... then there's editing, which teaches story flow in a way that no sceenwriting class can match... You don't learn editing by reading about it. You have to do it to see how scenes cut together or don't. Believe me, your screenwriting will change. You can lie to yourself about your screenplay, but not what you see on film."

Winning entries will be published in the Architectural Review and displayed at the Conference. All students, worldwide, who at the time of preparing their submission are registered at a Higher Education Institution are eligible. Individual and group entries are acceptable. This summary is based on information from the site:
"Competitors are asked to design a small sustainable sports centre that will serve as a focus for a poor community... (The site) can be located in a rural or an urban context... The architectural response to the site will be amongst the criteria for judging the competition. The centre should aim at attracting people to participate in sport and physical activity, particularly young people. As such, it should have social facilities and its design should attract members of the community to participate in the building. The competition jury is not looking for a large centre, but one that will serve a wide spectrum of a small population. It can serve a social purpose... It can also perform a valuable role in persuading people to pursue a healthy agenda... Entrants may choose a theme for the building...
Whilst the competition is about social context and site response, proposals should also indicate the structure , materials, special qualities, lighting, and furniture and fittings. The design must demonstrate clear principles of sustainability not only through the choice of materials and management of energy and waste, with appropriate use of natural lighting and ventilation, but also in social aspects. These will obviously reflect the climate, culture and context relating to the facility. Adaptability can be a bonus to encourage flexibility of use now and in the future... (E)ntrants should consider a building that requires minimal maintenance and one that is easy to manage and operate. " Please direct queries to:

"AIA Chicago is undergoing an ideas competition to solicit designs for a new office... (T)he new office has the potential to accomplish several key goals of the chapter. Among these are, creating a more inviting space for member interaction, creating a space that is more accessible and visible to the public in order to strengthen our connection with the community, and designing a space that reflects who we are and what we do as a profession.
Meeting spatial program criteria, budget constraints, and incorporating technological and sustainable design features are critical to the quantitative aspects of the design solution. In addition, a successful architectural outcome will respond to the qualitative criteria of usefulness to the members, staff well being and interaction, access and visibility to the public and members, comfort, safety and security of all occupants and visitors to AIA.
Other stated goals of this competition are to support students, yet to be licensed and newly licensed professionals, to aide in selecting an architect of record for the office, and to speed delivery of documents and build-out of the space by year's end. All of these criteria will be used to judge and award a winner of the competition.
Competition entrants are encouraged to explore new ideas about the chapter office and how its design informs the way AIA Chicago operates."

As this competition desires to build the winning design, entrants are strongly encouraged, but not required, to team with a licensed architect. That is why the library also needs to be improved, extended and given new functions. The City if Stockholm is organising an international two stage architectural competition for the extension.

www.cgco.co.jp/english/conversion.html -Apparently, this is another competition from Shinkenenchiku-sha,Co.Ltd. with the co-sponsor, Central Glass, Co. Ltd. (I say apparently because I'm not certain that this is a separate competition; but it appears to be a distinctly different competition.) This competition is Central Glass's 41st Competition with the theme of: "Conversion of Existing Architecture for Living in the City". The first place prize is 2,000,000 (yen) and a commemorative gift. The second places (there will be 3) are for 300,000 (yen) and commemorative gifts for each of the three winners. Lastly, the honorable mentions prizes (there will be 6) are 100,000 (yen) and a commemorative gift for each of the six winners. Here is how the competition is described on the site:
"Given the longevity of architecture in the city, there are an increasing number of buildings still fit for use despite having outlived their functional role...Moreover, buildings beloved by the people of a neighborhood, buildings that deserve preservation, or ... can be considered for the revitalization of urban memories... (I)t could be said that schemes for the conversion of existing buildings in order to live in the city center will become an important new role for architects. These residential forms would of course include use as mass housing, but various other usages, such as the long-term stay model or small hotel, can also be considered ...
Applicants should choose existing buildings for their entries. In establishing ways to convert these into rich urban residences, concrete proposals are preferable to the presentation of abstract concepts and ideas.
From now on, this competition will adopt a two-stage method of first judging by drawings, and then judging by interviews open to the public. It will also emphasize reality as a judging criterion. What is meant here by reality is not the ability for a project to be directly implemented, but rather a clear expression of the ambition and potential to transform society and the era through architecture. By comprehending this meaning, we hope to receive entries that are appropriate to constructing the future."
No registrations are necessary for this competition. Specific rules and guidelines are available on this site. Address entries to: Dept. of Central Glass International Architectural Design Competition 2006; Shinkenchiku-sha Co., Ltd.; 2-31-2 Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8501 Japan. To meet the deadline, all entries must reach the competition office by no later than July 10 (Monday), 2006.

In this competition, there will be over $60,000 in cash and prizes that will be awarded. Also, Paramount runs multiple contests throughout the year. To quote the site,
"Multiple contests throughout the year mean prizes are awarded faster and more often than contests that happen only once a year. We level the playing field. Emerging songwriters don't have to compete with writers who've already had major-label recordings.
